1. INTRODUCTION

For any group of individuals to live together in harmony, a certain code of behaviour is necessary. Such a code is as follows:

LOVE OUR HOSTEL AND RESPECT ALL WHO LIVE IN IT AND NEAR IT

which means:

a) Treat all whom are part of our hostel with the utmost respect and dignity - then they will respect you too.
b) In all behaviour (words and deeds) you should be a credit to your hostel. Be prepared to "give" yourself fully to Brebner, for there is a deep satisfaction and joy in self-sacrifice : you will feel more part of Brebner and be able to love your school and our hostel. YOU ARE BREBNER HOSTEL: and WHAT YOU ARE, BREBNER HOSTEL IS.

2. GENERAL PRINCIPLES:

The hostel accommodates 118 students. We have to maintain an atmosphere of orderliness and discipline where each student can feel safe and achieve their academic goals.

There will be no form of formal initiation under any guise. There will be absolutely no intimidation either physical or mental. Older students may not force younger students to do any tasks for them.

Communication between parents and hostel is vitally important. Parents should feel free to contact the hostel warden if there is a problem.

We expect hostel students to participate enthusiastically in extramural activities suited to their talents.
There will be 2 (two) compulsory out weekends every term.

3. RULES:

N.B.: All school rules are also applicable to hostel students.

3.1 Any broken items must be repaired or replaced or the students account will be charged with the applicable
amount. Vandalism could lead to expulsion from the hostel.

3.2 Any promiscuity could lead to expulsion.

3.3 Students should at all times be polite, friendly, well mannered and greet all visitors to the hostel.

3.4. No smoking will be allowed. The use of alcohol or drugs is also prohibited.

3.5 No boarder may leave the hostel or school grounds without permission and without a signing out card. Only the hostel warden or supervisor allocated may give permission for a student to leave the hostel to go to town or home.

3.6 Pocket Money

Sufficient pocket money must be given to students. Do not leave your child at the hostel with no money at all - this may lead to temptation and theft. No money is to be kept in cupboards. Pay pocket money in at the Warden.

3.7 N.B. All clothing items must be clearly marked with your child’s student number and or Name.

Laundry must be handed in on Tuesday after breakfast and collected on Thursday after supper. Students who stay in for a particular weekend may also hand their washing in. Linen must be changed every Tuesday morning after breakfast.

3.8 Rooms, passages and stairs must be swept each morning. Bathrooms must be cleaned. Cupboards must be kept in a tidy state. The hostel buildings and surroundings must be kept clean. No littering. Students must bath / shower every day. Students’ clothes must be washed regularly. Sanitary conditions and toilet-usage must be of the highest standard. Any student who is deemed to create unhealthy conditions in the hostel will be expelled immediately. Good table manners must be observed at all times.
3.9 During recreation times, Hostel students may only use the sandpit, soccer fields, tennis courts and hockey fields. All other school buildings are out of bounds.
If hostel students become a hindrance to the local community either in the hostel or while using the school facilities(e.g. swimming pool) this privilege will be stopped.

3.10 No food may be prepared in the rooms.

3.11 If any student’s radio can be heard outside his/her room it will be confiscated and that person will not be permitted to bring a radio into the hostel again. Electrical extension cords will also be confiscated.

3.12 All students must be in their own rooms after lights out at night.

.13 Meals are compulsory and students must be prompt for
all meals.
3.14 Preps are also compulsory for all students. Students will have at least 1 - 2 hours prep per day. Times will be determined and regulated by the Warden.
3.15 Students must take all clothes and personal belongings home during the school holidays.
Cell phones are permissible but limited use as per Hostel Warden’s instructions.

3.16. Clothing

Students must have sufficient
a) school clothes.
b) underwear
Very expensive clothes should rather be left at home.

3.18. Students out-weekends
(at least two per term)
a) During compulsory out-weekends School might close at 12:00. All students must have left the hostel by 17:00 and not return to the hostel before 15:00 on last day of weekend. The last meal served on a hostel out-weekend will be breakfast. The next meal will only be breakfast on the first school day after the out- weekend.

b) Parents must, inform the Warden in writing, if their children may not leave the Hostel or go to certain people during weekends. In all cases where such instructions, in writing, are not personally handed to the warden, the warden will grant all students hostel leave at his discretion and the school/hostel will accept no responsibility at all regarding any incident
whatsoever during such leave of absence from the hostel. The Warden will however supply a contact telephone no.

c) Students may not leave the hostel for only one night during a weekend. If they sign out they must do so for the entire weekend. They may not return to the hostel if they have signed out. The principle is "if in, they are in, if out, they are out".
d) Students may not be left in the hostel for too long a period without seeing their parents. This especially
applies to younger students since it leads to major adjustment problems. We recommend that a student go home at least every third weekend.

3.19 Discipline

a) The hostel is not a prison. We cannot look after each child for 24 hours of the day. We rely on the co-operation and honesty of students to follow the rules.

b) If we find students are
(i) continually breaking the rules or not adjusting to hostel life, they will be removed from the hostel.
(ii) The final decision lies with the Superintendent of the Hostel.

c) The hostel is not a reform institution and if we find out students are being sent to hostel because their parents cannot "control" them, they will be removed immediately.

d) Any students who fail a year would not be re-admitted to the hostel unless there are extenuating circumstances.

3.20 Breakage’s Students caught breaking anything in the hostel will have to pay for it. Students perpetrating acts of vandalism could be expelled.

3.21. Punishment
Various forms of punishment will be given to students for offences. These include garden duty, office duty, and also forms of punishment given to children by their parents at home. If a parent does not accept our disciplinary measures the student will be removed from the hostel.

3.22 Hostel Rooms
